other と another

  • other は、「他の人・物」という意味を表します。ふつう、前に the や some, any, one, no などをつけたり、複数形になりますが、単数形の単独では用いません。一方、anotherは、「不特定の別のもう \(1\) 人・\(1\) つ」の意味を表します。どちらも、代名詞のほかに形容詞としてはたらきます。 another は、an+other が \(1\) つになった語で、

\(\boldsymbol{\cdot}\)　冠詞 a, an, the がつかない
\(\boldsymbol{\cdot}\)　複数形にならない
\(\boldsymbol{\cdot}\)　形容詞がつかない

という決まりがあります。

I don't like this shirt. このシャツは気に入らない。

one \(\sim\) the other ... \(:\) 「(\(2\) 者のうち) 一方は～、他方は …」
I have two dogs.　One is white, and the other is brown.
私は \(2\) 頭の犬を飼っている。\(\boldsymbol{1}\) 頭は白で、もう \(\boldsymbol{1}\) 頭は茶色です。

one \(\sim\) others ... \(:\) 「(\(3\) 者間以上で) 一つは～、残り全部は …」
I have five dogs.　One is white, and the others are brown.
私は犬を \(5\) 頭飼っている。　\(1\) 頭は白で、残りは全部茶色です。

some \(\sim\) others ... \(:\) 「～もあれば、… もある」
\(=\)　「あるものは～、他のものは…」 ― 不特定多数のものに用いる
Some like baseball, and others don't. 野球が好きな人もいれば、そうでない人もいる。
\(=\) Some poeple like baseball, and other people don't like it.
ある人は野球が好きで、他の人は嫌いだ。

some\(\;\sim\;\)the others ... \(:\) (多数の中で) 「あるものは～、残りの全部は…」
My grandfather grows a lot of tulips in the garden.　Some are red and the others are yellow.
祖父は庭でたくさんのチューリップを育てている。　あるものは赤で、残りは全部黄色だ。

each other, one another ... \(:\)「お互い（に、を）」
〈代名詞句〉として他動詞や前置詞の目的語になります。副詞句ではないので、自動詞の後に来る場合は前置詞とともに用いる必要があります。

〈他動詞の目的語〉
Mike and I always help each other. マイクと私はいつも助け合います

〈前置詞の目的語〉
We talked with each other about the plan. 私たちは計画について話し合った

〈所有格〉
Do you know each other's [one another's] weak points. あなた方はお互いの弱点を知っていますか。

  • 所有格は、other, another に \(\boldsymbol{'s}\) をつけます。 ふつう、each other は \(\boldsymbol{2}\) 者間で、 one another は \(\boldsymbol{3}\) 者以上間で用います。

the one\(\;\sim\;\)the other ... \(:\) 「前者は～、後者は…」 \(=\) the former ～ the latter ...
Sendai and Fukushima are in Tohoku.　The one lies north of the other.
仙台と福島は東北にあるが、前者は後者の北にある。
\(=\) The former lies north of the latter.

on the one hand, \(\sim\) on the other hand ... \(:\) 「一方では～、他方では…」
On the one hand we had a lot of food, but on the other hand we had little water.
一方で我々には食料がたくさんあったが、他方では水がほとんどなかった。
