受動態の特別用法
特別な受動態とは、受動態の形はしていても受動態の意味にはならなかったり、通常の受動態のように、\(by\;\sim\) の形にならないものなどをいいます。受動態が好んで用いられる場合
次のような場合、英語では好んで受動態が用いられます。\(\boldsymbol{a)}\) 行為者を表す必要がないときや、行為者が不明なとき
English is spoken in Canada. |

何か被害にあったときなど、被害を与えたものよりも被害を受けたものに重点を置くことが多く、その場合に受動態を用います。Our school was destroyed \(by\;an\;earthquake\). |

\(\boldsymbol{c)}\) 文の主語をかえずに続けたいとき
\(1\) つの文の主語が同じほうが、流れが自然でリズムもよくなります。\(\boldsymbol{\color{red}{Hiroshi}}\) uses the Internet, and is always given useful information by it. |
ヒロシはインターネットを利用すると、いつも役に立つ情報〈が〉得られる。 |
\(Hiroshi\) uses the Internet, and \(it\) always gives him useful information. |
\(\boldsymbol{by}\) 以外の前置詞を用いる表現
受動態の行為者は、ふつう \(by\) を用いて表しますが、使われる過去分詞の性質によっては \(with,\;in,\;to,\;at\) など \(by\) 以外の前置詞を用いることがあります。これらは、ひとつの慣用表現として暗記するようにします。過去分詞が状態を表す形容詞のような働き

〈\(\boldsymbol{be}\)動詞 \(\boldsymbol{+}\) 過去分詞〉が感情を表す
日本語ではふつう、「~する」と能動的に表現するのを、英語では受動態で表現することがあります。特に 感情や心理を表す場合に用いられます。このとき、〈前置詞 \(+\) 行為を受けるもの〉が感情や心理の根拠を表します。be surprised at | ―― 「~に驚く」 |
You will be surprised at the news tomorrow. |
明日その知らせを聞いたらびっくりするだろう。 |

慣用的に受動態で用いる
災害や被害などを表す文は、ふつう受動態にします。Many houses were damaged by the flood. |
多くの家が洪水の被害を受けた。 |
