イディオム

イディオムは、熟語あるいは慣用表現などとも呼ばれ、数個の語が連なって動詞や形容詞・副詞などのはたらきをすることば をいいます。熟語に関する問題もよく出ますので日ごろから少しずつ覚えるようにしましょう。

動詞のはたらきをするもの

動詞と前置詞または副詞が結びついて、\(1\) つの動詞のはたらきをする語群を群動詞(ぐんどうし)といいます。これらの中には、もとの動詞の意味に近いものもありますが、 take after (~に似ている)のように、もとの意味とは全く異なったものに変化するものも存在しますので、\(1\) つずつ確実に覚えます。群動詞には次のような形があります。

〈動詞 \(+\) 前置詞〉

add to ―― 「~を増す

Hard work must be able to \(add\;to\) your stock of knowledge.
一生けんめい勉強すれば知識の蓄積が得られるに違いない
\(←\) 熱心な勉強は知識の蓄積を増やせる

arrive at \(=\) get to \(=\) reach ―― 「~に到着する

We must \(arrive\;at\) the station by ten.
\(=\) We must \(get\;to\) the station by ten.
\(=\) We must \(reach\) the station by ten.
\(10\) 時までに駅に着かなければならない

believe in ―― 「~を信じる

Many people \(believe\;in\) God.
を信じる人はたくさんいます

belong to ―― 「~に属する、~のものである

The red car \(belongs\;to\) Dr. Brown.
\(=\) The red car is Dr. Brown's [car].
その赤い車はブラウン教授のものです

call for ―― 「~を求める、~が必要とする

A flood or an earthquake \(calls\;for\) quick action.
洪水や地震にはすばやい行動が必要だ

call on [at] ―― 「~を訪ねる

I'll \(call\;on\) you later.
後ほどお訪ねします

care for ―― 「~を好む、欲する

He doesn't \(care\;for\) fame.
彼は名声を好みません。
\(=\) Would you \(care\;for\) more wine.
ワインをもっといかが

主に、否定文・疑問文・条件文に用いられます

come across ―― 「~と偶然出くわす

I \(came\;acros\) my classmate at Shibuya Station.
渋谷駅で偶然クラスメートに出くわした

deal with ―― 「~を扱う、処理する

How should we \(deal\;with\) this difficult problem ?
この難問にどう対処したらいいでしょう

depend on ―― 「[人が] ~を頼る、当てにする

Japan \(depends\;on\) foreign countries for oil.
日本は海外に石油を依存している
\(←\) 石油を得るために外国を頼る

get in ―― 「[小さい乗り物] に乗る
\(⇔\) get out of ―― 「[小さい乗り物] から降りる

I have met that man who tries to \(get\;in\) the car.
に乗ろうとしているあの男性に会ったことがある

listen to ―― 「~を聞く

Be quiet and \(listen\;to\) me !
静かにして私の言うことを聞きなさい

get on ―― 「[大きい乗り物] に乗る
get off ―― 「[大きい乗り物] から降りる

laugh at ―― 「~を笑う

Everybody in the class \(laughed\;at\) his funny story.

look at ―― 「~を見る

川にかかったあの橋をごらんなさい

look for ―― 「~を探す

look after ―― 「~を世話する

Will you \(look\;after\) my baby while I'm out ?

look into ―― 「~をのぞき込む、~を調べる

The police began to \(look\;into\) the case.
警察がその事件を調べ始めた

look like ―― 「~のように見える、~に似ている

What does your boyfrined \(look\;like\) ?
あなたのボーイフレンドってどんな人

rely on ―― 「[人・ことを] 頼る、当てにする

Don't \(rely\;on\) other people for everything.
何事も人頼みにする

take after ―― 「~に似ている

She doesn't \(take\;after\) her parents at all.
彼女は両親にまったく似ていない

wait for ―― 「~を待つ

We had to \(wait\;for\) the next train for about two hours.
次の列車をおよそ \(2\) 時間待たねばならなかった

〈自動詞 \(+\) 前置詞〉で \(1\) つの他動詞のはたらきをします。この中には、受動態にできるものもあります。 これらの群動詞には、後に続く前置詞によって意味が異なるものがありますので注意します。

〈動詞 \(+\) 副詞〉

自動詞 \(+\) 副詞〉は \(1\) つの自動詞として、〈他動詞 \(+\) 副詞〉は \(1\) つの他動詞としてはたらきます。 他動詞のはたらきをするものの中には受動態にできるものがあります。また、同じ群動詞で自動詞・他動詞両方のはたらきをするものもあります。

break down ―― 「故障する

This machine often \(breaks\;down\).
この機械はよく故障する

break out ―― 「突然起こる、勃発する

When did Word War I \(break\;out\) ?
第 \(1\) 次世界大戦はいつ起きましたか

drop in ―― 「ちょっと立ち寄る

I'll take you to the coffee shop at which I often \(drop\;in\).
よく立ち寄る喫茶店へお連れします

get up ―― 「起きる、起床する

My mother gets up at six every morning.
母は毎朝 \(6\) 時に起きます

go on ―― 「続ける、進める

I'd like to \(go\;on\) being a teacher.
教師を続けたいと思います

run away ―― 「逃亡する、脱走する

A tiger \(ran\;away\) from the zoo last night.
\(1\) 頭のトラが昨夜動物園から脱走した

stay up ―― 「寝ずに起きている

He was late for shool because he \(stayed\;up\) late last night.
昨夜夜更かしをしたので彼は遅刻した

他動詞 \(+\) 副詞

bring up ―― 「~を育てる

Four children was \(brought\;up\) by Jane.
\(4\) 人の子供はジェーンが育てた
\(←\) ジェーンによって育てられた

call up ―― 「~に電話する

I'll \(call\) you \(up\) at ten in the morning.
午前 \(10\) 時に電話します

give up ―― 「~をあきらめる、やめる

You should not \(give\;up\) your dream.
をあきらめないで

hand in ―― 「~を提出する

Have you \(handed\;in\) your homework yet ?
もう宿題を提出しました

pick up ―― 「~を拾い上げる

When did you \(pick\;up\) this purse there ?
いつそこでこの財布を拾いました

put off ―― 「~を延期する

The meeting was \(put\;off\) again.
また会議が延期になった

put on ―― 「~を身につける、着る

You can \(put\;on\) your coat here.
ここでは上着を着ても結構です

turn on [off] ―― 「〈火・スイッチを〉つける、[消す]

Could you \(turn\;on\) the light, please ?
電気をつけていただけませんか

turn up [down] ―― 「〈火・明かりを〉強くする、弱くする
―― 「〈ボリュームを〉を上げる、下げる

Either \(turn\;down\) the radio or turn it off.
ラジオのボリュームを下げるか消しなさい

 次の点に注意!

\(\boldsymbol{a)}\) [他動詞 \(+\) 副詞] の中には受動態も可能:
We must \(put\;off\) the meeting next week.
\(→\) The meeting must \(be\;put\;off\) next week.

\(\boldsymbol{b)}\) 自動詞と他動詞両方のはたらき:

His plane \(took\;off\) at nine thirty.
彼を乗せた飛行機は \(9\) 時半に離陸した
〈他動詞〉

\(\boldsymbol{c)}\) [他動詞 \(+\) 副詞] と目的語の語順:

動詞 \(+\) [副詞] \(+\) 名詞, 動詞 \(+\) 名詞 \(+\) [副詞] の両方可能
\(\small{②}\) 目的語が代名詞の場合
必ず 動詞 \(+\) 代名詞 \(+\) 副詞 の語順

pay attention to ―― 「~に注意を払う

地震には特に注意を払う必要がある

take care of ―― 「~の世話をする

Your dog is \(taken\;care\;of\) by me while you are out.
留守中、あなたの犬が面倒を見ます

pay a visit to ―― 「~を訪ねる

I'd like to \(pay\;a\;visit\;to\) you before long.

take part in ―― 「~に参加する

We have \(taken\;part\;in\) that music festival for three years.

come up to ―― 「~に近づく、達する

look up at ―― 「~を見上げる

夜の空を見上げれば火星が見られます

speak well of ―― 「~のことをよく言う、~をほめる

I was \(spoken\;well\;of\) by my teacher yesterday.
きのう先生にほめられた

speak ill of ―― 「~のことを悪く言う、~をけなす

Never \(speak\;ill\;of\) the dead.
死者にムチ打つなかれ(ことわざ)

〈\(\boldsymbol{be}\;+\;\)形容詞 \(+\) 前置詞〉

~している」 という状態を表す動詞のはたらきをします。

be anxious for [about] ―― 「~を心配している
We \(are\;anxious\;for\) [about] his health.
彼の健康が心配です
\(←\) 健康〈を/について〉心配している

be aware of ―― 「~に気付いている、認識している
We should be aware of the fact that climbing that mountain is dangerous.
その山へ登るのは危険だという事実を自覚すべきだ
\(←\) 事実〈に気付いている〉べきだ

be absent from ―― 「~を欠席する
He has \(been\;absent\;from\) school since last week.
彼は先週から学校を欠席している

be afraid of ―― 「~を恐れる
Don't \(be\;afraid\;of\) making mistakes.
間違いを恐れないで

be different from ―― 「~と違う

The climate of Osaka \(is\) quite ¥(different\;from\) that of Cairo.
大阪の気候はカイロのそれはまったく違います

be fond of ―― 「~が好きだ

生徒たちはお互いにさよならを言いました

*each other は \(2\) 者に用い、 one another は \(3\) 者以上に用います。また、これらは主語にはならないので注意します。
